Welcome to Bus Queensland Toowoomba. Below is everything you need to know about using your SmartCard for school travel.

Using Your SmartCard

All students travelling on Bus Queensland services must:

  • Tap on when boarding

  • Tap off when exiting

Note:This includes transfer Students

Failure to do so will result in a default fare being charged, even if you are eligible for free or subsidised travel.

Note: Your SmartCard remains the property of Bus Queensland and may be deactivated for inappropriate conduct or misuse.

Updating Your Details

If your home address or school changes, please:

  • Notify the Bus Queensland Toowoomba Office as soon as possible.

  • Submit a new STAS application to continue receiving free or subsidised travel.

Fare Policy Overview

All students must either:

  • Hold a valid SmartCard issued by Bus Queensland, or

  • Pay the appropriate fare for each trip.

There are three types of fare categories:

Free Travel (STAS Approved)

  • You’ve been assessed as eligible for fully subsidised travel through the Queensland Government’s School Transport Assistance Scheme (STAS).

  • You will still need to tap on and off each time you travel.

Top-Up Fare (Partially Subsidised STAS)

  • You’ve been approved for partially subsidised travel.

  • Your SmartCard has been pre-loaded to automatically deduct the Top-Up fare when you tap on and off.

Full Fare Travel (Non-STAS)

  • You’re not eligible for STAS assistance.

  • Your SmartCard will deduct the standard fare based on your trip’s distance between boarding and alighting points.

How Fares Are Calculated

  • Top-Up fares are calculated using your approved STAS travel route.

  • Full fares are based on the distance between your origin (boarding stop) and destination (alighting stop).

How to Add Funds to Your SmartCard

You can top up your SmartCard using the following option:

  1. Via the TransportMe Passenger App, available for download on mobile devices. Please see the link below for help.

Lost or Damaged Cards

If you lose or damage your SmartCard:

  • Contact or email Bus Queensland Toowoomba.

  • If there is stored value on your old card, it will be transferred to your new card (upon account verification).

Tracking Your Bus in Real Time

Monitor your school bus location live using the TransportMe™ Passenger App - Operator Bus Queensland. This feature allows parents and students to stay updated on the estimated arrival time, route progress, and any delays.

Do I Need a New Card Each Year?

No. Bus Queensland SmartCards are built to last and designed for long-term use. You do not need a new card each year unless your eligibility or circumstances change.

However, STAS travel approval must be reviewed annually to ensure you remain eligible for free or discounted travel.

Apply for a Non-Student SmartCard

If you are not a student and wish to travel using Bus Queensland services, you can apply for a Non-Student SmartCard for convenient tap-on/tap-off access.
